Haribo
German company founded on 13 December 1920 by Hans Riegel in Bonn, its name derived from the acronym HAns RIegel BOnn. The business started with minimal resources: a sack of sugar, a marble slab, a stool, a built-in stove, a copper cauldron and a roller. In 1960 Haribo launched the Goldbears, which in 1967 received official trademark recognition from the German patent office. Haribo sweets are now available in over 120 countries. The catalogue includes gummy sweets in various shapes and flavours, liquorice, marshmallows and confectionery. The range has evolved by using fruit and vegetable concentrates to achieve less garish colours. Today the company produces at 16 sites in ten countries and employs over 7,000 people.
